UNIX Administrator
JCPenney SSC IT - Lathrop, CA


Basic Function:
Support end user operations, work with remote support groups to implement hardware and software changes, provide support and administration of applications and servers located within the facility.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
1. Monitor UNIX systems servers (HP-UX, Solaris) and related components to deliver a highly available and stable system capable of supporting all business applications.

2. Monitor and complete daily file processing, perform system backups, examine logs files, escalate identified issues to appropriate group and creates, modifies, or deletes local system accounts.

3. Interface with remote support groups and local vendors to implement hardware and software changes, analyze system failures, replace or coordinate the replacement of failed equipment and provide hands-on assistance for 2nd level problem resolution.

4. Provide hands-o n user support, for a diverse and varying knowledge level group, and first level problem resolution for all IT equipment (not limited to printers, PC's, monitors, UPS systems, hubs, switches, routers, media converters, cabling, wireless devices) and desktop software (Microsoft Windows O/S, Microsoft Office, Hummingbird, IE).

5. Daily administration of the LAN (wired/wireless) including system stability, integrity, capacity, and troubleshooting.

6. Effectively uses all available resources (local, web-based, vendor, support groups, Change Control) to plan and implement new hardware/software installs, de-installs, upgrades, and relocations to ensure no operational impacts occur. Ensure equipment inventory is kept current in the Asset Management Peregrine data base.

7. Use technical writing and effective documentation skills to thoroughly document problem resolutions using the Remedy Action Request system, per department standards, for future troubleshoot ing support and historical reference.

8. Thoroughly understands the functional operation of all SSC systems and processes in order to interpret reports, identify problematic trends, recognize and correct potential process deficiencies.

Basic Knowledge:

* Functional knowledge of HP-UX and Solaris (print queues, log files, system backups, file system, user account setup and maintenance)

* Installation, configuration, troubleshooting and functional knowledge of common desktop software applications (Microsoft O/S, Office, E-mail, Internet Explorer) and common desktop hardware (printers, monitors, keyboards, mice)

* Understanding of basic wired and wireless networking concepts

* Technical writing, analytical skills, effective written and oral communication

Previous Experience:
* Intermediate job related experience, vendor certifications, college degree in related field or combination thereof.

Additional Qualifica tions:

Excellent verbal, written and inter-personal skills. Degree or certification in Computer Science
or equivalent business experience. High aptitude for systems and advanced computer skills.
Ability to train and assist users. Able to work independently with minimal supervision and
have the ability to work under pressure in a fast paced environment. Able to access the end
users needs and translate them to system development, enhancements and procedures
