Job description:



This is a senior-level position. The senior administrator applies a broad knowledge of systems programming/analysis concepts, practices and procedures. Incumbents are competent to work on fairly complex assignments (and/or portions of larger, complex systems) and perform a standard range of system operations activities. The incumbent generally works under deadlines and is capable of handling heavy workloads, operating with only general supervision, although errors at this level can cause delay, expense and/or disruption. May provide functional guidance to less experienced staff. Provides functional and technical expertise to formulate computer system scope and objectives develops and/or modifies procedures to solve problems using information systems. Prepares documentation for computer operations/programs sequencing, performs multiple software functions and supports hardware platforms. Assignments are in technical, scientific and business functional areas.



Representative principal duties and responsibilities:



Analyze, modify, and/or design computer environments and applications to ensure user requirements/program objectives are met.

Apply best practices where possible or engineer new best practices as appropriate.

Develop documentation including the use of flowcharts, project specifications, or diagrams; develop/modify illustrations of operational sequences necessary to meet user requirements.

Analyze new and existing vendor software; install, maintain, and customize vendor software as required.

Develop and recommend alternative system engineering approaches to realize desired specifications and/or enhancements based on user requirements. Perform feasibility studies, life cycle analysis, and/or cost/benefit studies.

Consult with end users to identify current operational procedures and clarify user objectives.

Monitor system and application performance to detect errors; apply testing procedures/methodologies (e.g., diagnostic software) and provide interpretation of data.

Provide a root-cause analysis for recurring or critical problem

Provide input during client strategic planning (as required) as part of technical expertise.

May provide guidance to and assist in the training of less experienced staff; provides hardware/software training as required.

Maintain industry/technical knowledge base and facilitates/maintains industry relationships.

Proficiency using personal computer and associated work station/computer-assisted tools, etc.

Demonstrate commitment to providing customer-focused quality service.



Required background:



A 4-year degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field, or equivalent experience.

6+ years of AIX systems administration experience, or equivalent experience

Experience with AIX 5.1, including, but not limited to, LVM, TCPIP (setup and routing), performance monitoring and tuning tools, installation options, problem determination and recovery, and AIX security

Experience with Power4 architectures, including LPAR technology and HMCs

Experience writing and debugging shell scripts in a standard UNIX shell

Experience with AIX 5.2 and pSeries Power4 architectures



Desired background:



Experience with AIX 5.3 and Power5 architecture (same subsystems as listed previously)

Experience with NIM

Experience with AIX performance tuning and capacity planning

Experience with high availability architectures and concepts (possibly including, but not limited to, HACMP)

Experience with enterprise backup/restore architectures and concepts (possibly including, but not limited to, TSM and/or Netbackup)

Experience managing SAN-attached storage in an AIX environment (possibly including, but not limited to, ESS/Shark, EMC, and/or Hitachi)

Experience with disaster recovery planning, implementation, and execution

Project management experience

Experience mentoring other administrators

Experience writing and debugging scripts in Perl

Experience with an enterprise-class monitoring tool
