SQL Server DBA in Dallas, TX


Our client is looking for a SQL Server DBA. This person would help our client grow and help them as their Datawarehouse Department grows. This position is responsible for the day-to-day maintenance, monitoring, and security of the SQL Server databases, including on-call and emergency remote access administration tasks. The position is also responsible for production implementation of database changes as well as assistance with the design of efficient database and storage structures.

OVERALL RESPONSIBILITY:

Security Administration The position is responsible for the security of the database environments, including database role setup and management, permissions configuration, permissions removal and adherence to the company database security policy. In addition, the position is responsible for periodic audits of database security and logging changes and audits conducted.
Backup and Recovery The position is responsible for the design, configuration and exception of daily database backups, monitoring and logging backup jobs, tape library rotation and management, and database restoration when required. In addition, the position is responsible for the periodic testing of backup and restoration and the periodic synchronization of the production and development environments.
Monitoring and Forecasting The position is responsible for monitoring database performance, growth and disk space usage and providing routine reports to the data warehouse manager concerning these metrics. In addition, the position is repressible for forecasting growth and participating in the evaluation and recommendation of hardware and storage requirements.
Database Maintenance The position is responsible for the configuration, implementation and oversight of routine database maintenance jobs, such as re-indexing and index defrag, integrity checks, data file shrink, and file defragmentation.
Production Implementation - The position is responsible for the implementation into the production environment on a controlled schedule and according to change management policy the new objects and functionality produced by the development staff. In addition, the position is responsible for participating in the testing of the objects and functionality prior to implementation to ensure the environment will respond as anticipated.
Emergency Response Troubleshooting and Recovery The position is responsible for on-call response to troubleshoot and resolve database and platform problems that affect the ability of others to perform their expected duties and reach deadlines.

The position will also assist in the following areas:

Design of database architecture
SQL development
Evaluation of user requirements and project scoping
Hardware and storage management


This position will receive overall guidance and direction concerning project priority, meeting user requirements, conformance to development standards and technical direction and advice where appropriate from his/her direct supervisor/manager. In supporting the business users needs, however, this position will operate with a high degree of autonomy (within established and accepted norms). Therefore, persons in this position must be capable of making sound, business-based decisions on-the-fly in the best interest of the Company and with limited direct input from the Manager, Data Warehousing Services.

Additionally, the volume of work performed/supported by this position will vary largely from day-to-day and consists, to a high degree, of interrupt driven user requests/demands for service. This can often create significant challenges in meeting committed targets and deliverables and requires monitoring and feedback to the supervisor concerning workload.

Strong, up-to-date, technology skills in SQL Server 2000 and 2005 administration, including OSQL
Excellent SQL language skills
Very good work organization skills
Data warehousing design and ETL a plus
Table partitioning and indexed views a plus
File group partitioning a plus
2-3 years demonstrated, continued success in SQL Server 2000 database administration
2-3 years of database backup and recovery with third-party tools (Veritas Backup Exec a plus)
